Introduction

Stillpoint is concerned with the whole of life.

Its many experiences - sensations, thoughts, feelings.

It is concerned with life as it is lived in the body, in the mind, in the spirit.

These three modes of our existence are intimately interconnected and cannot be theoretically separated without unforeseen side effects.

As well as warning us, this opens up ways of healing and growth by indirect means, for example working on the body to effect positive change in mind and spirit.

Stillpoint
's major disciplines are those of counselling, psychotherapy and spiritual direction.

All three terms are on the surface open to much misunderstanding, but all involve face to face meeting between two people for individual sessions.

Counselling is usually short-term (6-12 weeks) and addresses problems which are clearly seen by the person experiencing them and does not necessarily involve delving deep into a person's history or personality.

Psychotherapy can be very long-term, sometimes over a period of years, and can involve exploring deeper springs of motivation and sources of action. It will usually address behaviour which is very puzzling or very distressing, and which has usually been in existence for a long time.

Spiritual Direction is usually long-term, but does not often involve as frequent meetings as counselling or psychotherapy. It addresses issues to do with faith experience and particularly aims at furthering a person's faith journey. It is often called spiritual accompaniment, as it is well likened to accompanying someone on a journey, in this case a faith journey.

Stillpoint
does not often use a body-centred approach, but when it does uses SHEN, a non-invasive form of therapy aiming at the release of damaging emotions stored in the body as a result of stress.

The overall view which Stillpoint  takes is that most people's problems occur not as a result of definable illness but because their natural development (usually emotional or mental development) has been hindered or interrupted in some way. It therefore attempts with the tools at its disposal to overcome the hindrance and enable natural healing to take place.
